Why It's in the Collection
Steve Martin wrote this one himself, which tells you everything about where it sits in his career. L.A. Story is part love letter to Los Angeles, part not-so-gentle satire of the city (but also almost too prescient for when I lived there in the early ’00s), and par reflection on being lonely somewhere so aggressively sunny. Richard E. Grant is spectacular as a pompous food critic, and Patrick Stewart provides a small but very quotable cameo. If you’ve lived in SoCal, or are considering moving there, it’s required watching.
